Did I Stink Using Tom’s of Maine Aluminum-Free Deodorant?

For a long time, I’ve been wanting to try an aluminum-free deodorant. Would I buy or make my own deodorant?

Buying is convenient but I hesitated for a long time because of the negative reviews I’ve been reading online.

Then one day at Superstore, I grabbed Tom’s of Maine aluminum-free deodorant (64 g, unscented, $6.98) and runaway with it. As in, I stayed far away the organic section and go through my list of what else to buy.

Come what may. Though it’s a bit expensive compare to my Dove antiperspirant deodorant, it’s going to be worth it. Only if it works. I hoped so.

The Verdict

The moment of truth happened. I tried it once after taking a shower and put on my hoodie which I wear all year long. That’s typical of me who leaves in a basement that is cold in summer and fair in winter.

I don’t sweat that much except in my armpits. At the end of the day I knew that Tom’s of Maine wouldn’t work for me. (It’s not even 24 hours yet.)

My armpits was sweating and stank which wouldn’t happen if I’m using Dove. OK, maybe sweat a bit when exercising. I was disappointed but somehow anticipated the possibility of failure.

Why did it fail me? If it would help, have a look at the ingredients.

4. Aloe barbadensis leaf juice – certified organic

6. Humulus lupulus (Hops) extract

Apart from being an aluminum-free deodorant, it also has other claims

2. Ingredients’ Purpose & Source (IPS)
3. Giving Back
4. Sustainable Practices

I’m only familiar with the bunny symbol (Cruelty Free), for the rest, I have no clue. What I’m looking for is a symbol that says Tom’s of Maine is a vegan or vegetarian product. That would be a plus for me as long as the product is effective.

What Now?

Tom’s of Maine deodorant is sitting in the washroom drawer. I don’t want to throw it away just yet. Still hoping that I can have use for it.

Maybe I’ll use it at night, when all I do is lie on my left side for 5 hours, and wake up before the alarm no matter how late or early I sleep the night/morning before.

Gretchen Rubin, who wrote the The Four Tendencies, recommended Kopari coconut deodorant (C$19.17). OK there’s a recommendation from my favourite author so what’s stopping me?

The costly price is haunting my budget.

Nordstrom has it. And I’ll watch out whenever it will go on sale. Or I’ll try a DIY recipe from The Fit Housewife. I Will give an update with the outcome or maybe my urge to buy a vegan deodorant will peter out that I’ll forget about it.
